41487: Hanksite - $24 Searles Lake, San Bernardino County, California Type locality for hanksite Small cabinet - 6.2 x 5.6 x 4.0 cm 168 grams Specimen status: Available Send an email with specimen number to order A poorly translucent but sharply
formed, hexagonal hanksite crystal, with a frosted
surface. A second hanksite generation appears as crude,
more translucent crystals. The morphology is unusual for
the locality; most Searles Lake
hanksites are more prismatic whereas this sample is
distinctly tabular. Self standing for display. The species
has a reputation of decomposing if not preserved (often by
oiling) but this noncoated sample appears perfectly stable
(at least, in my local semiarid climate). Until a few
years ago hanksite was rather abundant in Southern
California, but the annual collection opportunity has been
permanently ceased and no more specimens are expected to
be available.
