Vesicles in a dark obsidian matrix host partial balls of off white, grainy cristobalite (no distinct crystals are seen). In one cristobalite cavity we see numerous small blades of dark fayalite. These need magnification for best appreciation. Cristobalite is a quartz polymorph - SiO2, whereas fayalite is an iron nesosilicate - Fe2+2SiO4.
