Material of this nature is often sold (especially to the mineralogically naive) as 'fossilized dinosaur poop' (because the shape and color of some appear fecal) but that's just a load of old crap. I know of no evidence for this; despite the relative abundance of this material I know of no examples containing fossil seeds or related residues. In truth, these are iron hydroxide/oxide concretions. This one has a pine cone-like appearance and is in fine condition.
