21022: Gypsum - $20 Point Dume, Malibu, Los Angeles County, California Miniature - 4.2 x 3.2 x 1.6 cm 22 grams Fluorescent (LW/SW) Specimen status: Available Send an email with specimen number to order A translucent to transparent, twinned
gypsum crystal. This specimen is complete all around, with
no point of attachment to matrix. The terminations are
somewhat hollow. Very minor rubbing, which is expected for
such a soft mineral (Mohs hardness = 2) and that was
collected (according to my notes) in the 1970's. Point Dume is
a famous Hollywood
set locality, having been featured in such as the
Statue of Liberty scene in the original Planet of the
Apes, or the deserted Pacific island (and home of
Jeannie's bottle) in the pilot of the TV show I Dream
of Jeannie. A must-have specimen for the collector
of gypsum, California specimens, or famous locality
specimens. Eerie internal blue fluorescence under both
longwave and shortwave ultraviolet.
