35542: Epidote and Magnetite - $42 Maldin Koh, Ras Koh Mountains, Kharan District, Balochistan, Pakistan Small cabinet - 7.7 x 7.6 x 5.5 cm 431 grams Specimen status: Available Send an email with specimen number to order A deep green, lustrous to sublustrous
epidote crystal. Based on their pseudo-octahedral
morphology and (in some cases) magnetic properties, these
were originally though to be epidote replacements of
magnetite (pseudomorphs). However subsequent work has
disproved this, and shown the magnetism is in fact due to
microscopic magnetite inclusions. When this material first
hit the market about a decade ago they were available in
abundance. Now much harder to find, especially larger
specimens such as this one. A few rough, matrix-included
spots but overall quality is quite nice. (In the initial
finds large specimens such as this were only rarely found
or collected in superb condition.)
